March 2003 Press Club board meeting

Minutes of Peninsula Press Club Board of Directors meeting of March 12, 2003, at the Kingfish Restaurant in San Mateo.

In attendance were: John Kane, Jon Mays, Dave Price, John Horgan, Aimee Lewis, Michelle Carter, Jack Russell and Bill Workman. Darryl Compton arrived late. The meeting was called to order at 6:16 p.m. by president John Kane.

Minutes of the Feb. 7, 2003, meeting were approved, 8-0. Michelle Carter’s treasurer’s report indicated total assets of $20,094.52. Scholarship monies amounted to $8,080.98. The treasurer’s report was approved, 8-0. The net cost of the Christmas party was about $140.

Aimee Lewis said she has secured a May 2 reservation at the Holiday Inn Select Hotel in Foster City for the club’s annual journalism awards banquet. The cost is expected to be $37 per dinner. Tickets are tentatively priced at $50 for club members, $60 for non-members. Michelle Carter again will MC the affair. John Kane again will prepare the script. Darryl Compton reported that, so far, there are 452 contest entries, 143 of them in categories for daily newspapers with circulations 75,000 and below.

John Kane said there were four applicants for college scholarships and 15 for high school cash awards. Michelle Carter said the annual high school journalism awards reception will be underwritten again by the Bohannon group. Darryl Compton requested that a discussion of the club’s bylaws be postponed.

It was determined to hold the club’s regular meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Kingfish Restaurant in San Mateo. It was agreed to allow $20 per month to pay for administering to the club’s Web site. There was no report on the future of the San Francisco Press Club.

Dave Price and Jon Mays said they would pursue re-instituting Bench/Bar/Media gatherings. Aimee Lewis said she would assist if necessary. There was a brief discussion about health insurance, job listings and internships for recent college journalism graduates.

John Kane urged the board members to begin thinking about 2003-04 club officers, particularly the presidency.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:32 p.m. The next meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. April 1 at the Kingfish Restaurant in San Mateo.
