Bay Guardian editor Tim Redmond found it annoying when Craigslist founder Craig Newmark repeatedly claimed in a San Francisco speech that he was “building community” with his classified advertising web site. Instead, Redmond says that Craigslist acts like Wal-Mart by giving away ads that wreck community newspapers, which can’t compete with free. Yet Craigslist doesn’t provide any of the other services of a local newspaper, like serving as a watchdog of local government, he says. And the money for those Craigslist ads leaves town.
