Paper accuses rival reporter of conflict

The Berkeley Daily Planet says in today’s edition (Feb. 3) that the rival Oakland Tribune printed two stories by reporter Alex Katz about the Oakland Unified School District after he notified the paper that he would be resigning to take a job as spokesman for the district. The Planet quoted Oakland Tribune editor Mario Dianda as saying that once Katz informed him of the hiring, he initally held the two stories, but decided to publish them after a review. One journalism expert quoted by the Planet had a problem with the Tribune publishing the stories after Katz gave notice while a second expert did not.
