Reuters is reporting tonight (Feb. 3) that Gannett Co., the nation’s largest newspaper company, has pulled out as a sole bidder for Knight Ridder and instead may be planning to make a joint bid with MediaNews Group, the company that owns the Oakland Tribune, Marin Independent Journal, San Mateo County Times and other Bay Area newspapers. Reuters attributed its report to “sources close to the sale process.”
