Stanford offers new reporting fellowship

A program at Stanford is offering one- to two-week fellowships for journalists who want to report on topics of significance to the Western United States, western Canada or northern Mexico. The fellowships were made possible by a $5 million gift from retired Sunset Magazine co-publisher Bill Lane (left), who is seen in this 2005 photo by Steve Castillo of the Stanford News Service. Lane and history Professor David Kennedy (right) are co-directors of the Center for the Study of the North American West. With Lane’s $5 million and an additional $4 million in matching funds from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the reinvigorated Center for the Study of the North American West aims to make Stanford the premier location where experts from a range of disciplines can address the region’s problems and prospects.
