BeyondChron, which calls itself San Francisco’s alternative online daily, says based on Gavin Newsom’s reaction to the Chronicle’s series on police brutality and other events, the “love affair” between the paper and the mayor has come to an end. Randy Shaw and Casey Mills write: “… it appears (Newsom’s) unhappy with his treatment of late by the paper. Newsom has enjoyed a steadfast devotion from the Chronicle, and may be unprepared to deal with harsh criticism from such a close ally. A prolonged Newsom-Chronicle spat could significantly alter coverage of the Mayor, and with it his sky-high approval ratings. Whether the two can mend their differences before real damage can be done will be revealed in the coming months.”
