The number of Internet blogs is doubling every five months, and one is created every second of every day, according to David Sifry, the president of Technorati, a San Francisco company that monitors traffic for internet blog sites. Sifry reports that every day, some 75,000 blogs are created, and there are 50,000 new postings per hour. Growth is especially fast in Asia, where last year Japanese surpassed English as the most common language for blogs. Chinese is catching up quickly. Sifry notes that the use of blogs soars when big news happens — spikes occur immediately after events such as the London bombings, Hurricane Katrina, passage of the Iraq constitution.
