Mayor changes opinion on brutality series

After initially criticizing a Chronicle series on police bruality because of a prominent photo error, SF Mayor Gavin Newsom is now saying that he is troubled by findings in the series, such as the claim that officers use force on blacks in 40% of the cases studied. That turnabout is now drawing fire from police union president Gary Delagnes, who slammed the mayor for “acknowledging there’s a problem when there isn’t a problem.” Newsom and police officials were initially critical of the Chonicle for incorrectly identifying a person in a prominent photo on the first day of the series, and Newsom disputed the paper’s claim that he had refused to give an interview on the subject. Police Chief Heather Fong asked if the photo was wrong, how accurate is anything else in the series?
