The Contra Costa Times’s Pat Craig, in his “Fool-Time Job” column this morning, complains that adding the ending of “gate” to the title of every scandal is clunky and shows a lack of creativity by journalists. “There are some tin-eared people in this business, who find it hugely funny to attach ‘gate to anything that even hints of scandal,” Craig writes. “This gives you things like Shoplifter-gate and Income Tax Return Cheating-gate. I know one guy whose entire life was made when he was writing a story about a piece of fence being stolen and managed to get Gate-gate in his lead paragraph.”
