A judge today (March 24) rejected Barry Bonds’ attempt to stop the authors and publishers from making money on a book claiming the Giants outfielder used steroids. Bonds is not suing for libel, but instead contends that the authors of “Game of Shadows,” Chron reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams, violated California’s business and professions code by using grand jury transcripts that were supposed to be secret. While San Francisco Superior Court Judge James Warren did not throw out the suit, he said it had little chance of success, according to an Associated Press report. It is widely believed that Bonds is avoiding a libel suit because that would subject him to cross-examination under oath by the defendants.
