The new owner of the Mercury News and Contra Costa Times, MediaNews Group, planning to develop a regional Web site that, according to John Simmerman of the CoCo Times, “aims to be a model for how old-guard newspapers can work and make money online.” Simerman doesn’t have much more information than when work about such a regional site first emerged on June 29. But the papers involved in the site would include Singleton’s group of 11 papers in the Bay Area and possibly the Hearst-owned Chronicle. Internal discussions on the proposed site will begin next Monday, Simmerman’s story says.
