Steve Geissinger, the Sacramento bureau chief for the Bay Area’s ANG Newspaper chain, received a national award Friday (Aug. 4) from the Association of Capital Reporters and Editors for coverage of California’s controversial entrance into multi-state Mega Millions. The articles, which earned a third-place award, triggered a lawsuit and judge’s ruling that is forcing the state to make changes in Mega Millions to prevent loss of funds to its beneficiary, public education, according to ANG. ANG also said the stories prompted Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s administration to fire the lottery director and two other top lottery officials and it inspired pending lottery-reform legislation.
