San Francisco-based online technology publication Wired News on Wednesday (Aug. 9) pulled three articles from its Web site after discovering that a freelancer, Philip Chien, apparently made up an interview with a space shuttle scientist, according to the Associated Press. In all three stories, Chien, a Florida author and space enthusiast who wrote a book about the Columbia shuttle disaster, quoted Robert Ash, a professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. When a Wired editor called Ash to verify a quotation, Ash said he never spoke to Chien. Wired announced it was pulling Chien’s articles on Wednesday with this announcement headlined “Wired News Writer Faked Info.”
