Marin Independent Journal sports reporter Ryan Metcalfe is scheduled to have more surgery today (Oct. 2) after he lost control of his car while exiting the Highway 101 in Novato and hit a tree after covering a high school football game, the IJ reported. Metcalfe, 36, of Novato, underwent four and a half hours of surgery at Marin General Hospital early Saturday morning after suffering broken bones in both legs, a broken elbow and wrist and injuries to his pelvis. He is in intensive care and will have further surgery today. “According to doctors, he is very lucky to be alive,” his mother, Phyllis Metcalfe, told the IJ. “Because of his age and because he was in such good health – these are the reasons he survived such a crash.”
