KNTV NBC11’s old transmitter atop Mt. Loma Prieta near San Jose caught fire on New Year’s Day, but the station — which has been transmitting from San Bruno Mountain (see photo) since 2005 — remained on the air. The old transmitter is used mainly as a microwave-receive point. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection responded at 3:24 p.m. to a report of the blaze, atop the mountain on Summit Road. No injuries were reported, a CDF spokesman said. The fire was contained around 5 p.m., according to CDF. Firefighters used hydraulic cutting tools — called the Jaws of Life — to access the structure, the CDF spokesman said.
