Mercury News reporter Connie Skipitares’s obit of Russ Robertson begins: “Russ Robertson was an old-school newspaperman who spent most of his career rubbing elbows with hard-bitten, no-nonsense editors who barked orders across the newsroom. But the kind, soft-spoken editor who worked at the San Jose Mercury News from 1959 to 1979 stood out among his colleagues as cool-headed and patient, always willing to take time with reporters to help them polish their copy.” Robertson, who was 90, died Tuesday at his Fremont home of a massive brain hemorrhage.
