It’s not news that Spanish-language KDTV Channel 14 has the highest ratings of any station airing news at 6 p.m. in the San Francisco market. It’s been that way since 2002 (as this Press Club item from January points out). But now, for the first time, “Noticias Univision 14” was Nov. 1 in November in the key 25-to-54 demographic desired by advertisers, according to the Chronicle. The Chron story also quotes KTVU Channel 2 News Director Ed Chapuis as saying his station will try to tap into the Spanish-speaking market by unveiling some new programming — not necessarily of the news variety — in the next few weeks. He declined to be more specific.

  1. Channel 14’s audience has grown because Telemundo 48 essentially dropped local news last year, a budget-cut imposed by new owner NBC U. Now Channel 48’s “local” news comes mostly out of Burbank and the station is doing very little in the community.
