Gilroy Dispatch goes from 5 to 2 days a week

The Gilroy Dispatch, a 4,200-circulation paper south of San Jose, told its readers this morning that it is switching from a five-day-a-week publishing schedule to just two days, Tuesday and Friday. Publisher Steve Staloch explained that the paper is getting 80 percent of its advertising revenue on those two days, and single-copy demand is greatest on those two days as well.

The Dispatch isn’t the first daily in the Bay Area to eliminate days that it is publishing. The Tracy Press dropped its Tuesday and Thursday editions in August and now just prints on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. In March 2006, the San Mateo Daily News, Redwood City Daily News and Burlingame Daily News dropped their Monday editions as part of a cost-cutting move by then-owner Knight Ridder.
