Bill Clinton arrived in the United States this morning after a dramatic 20-hour visit to North Korea, in which he won the freedom of Current TV reporters Euna Lee and Laura Ling, opened a diplomatic channel to North Korea’s reclusive government and dined with the North’s ailing leader, Kim Jong-il, the NY Times reports. The private plane carrying Clinton and the journalists landed at 5:50 a.m. PDT at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank. [More]

  1. So #3 is opposed to local and state governments receiving federal dollars based on tbe slippery slope argument. Demand local control, free of the feds. Say no to federal dollars.

  2. Josh Wolf's case proved how useless a shield law is, and why journalists shouldn't bother with them … Calif has a shield law. But Wolf took pictures of a SFPD squad car that was purchased by the City and County of San Francisco partially with a federal grant. Perhaps 1/17th of the car was funded by the grant. That was enough of a hook for the feds to take over what would have been a local case and demand that Wolf turn over his videotape (portions of which he had sold to KRON and KTVU). As a result of this federal rant, courts ruled that the Calif Shield Law didn't count and he would have to answer to federal charges, where there is no shield law. Since Bush and Obama have made sure that every element of city and state government receives federal funds, what good is it to have a state shield law? Wolf is a hero and in the years to come, many more of us will have to decide whether to go to prison or cough up whatever the government wants us to provide.

  3. Josh Wolf took it like a man. No national shield law existed to protect him from himself. Forcing ex presidents to bend a knee to secure the release of foolish reporters is about to go mainstream.

  4. Kudos to Bill Clinton for bailing out some of Al Gore's more naîve employees. Who can we send the bill to for waste of taxpayer money on the federal efforts to free them?
