San Francisco Press Club announces 2025 Emerging Journalist scholarship honorees

SAN FRANCISCO, NOV. 18, 2025 — The Press Club Board is pleased to announce that Nava Rawls and Richard H. Grant are the 2025 recipients of its “Emerging Journalist” scholarship. They will each receive a $5,000 stipend and be honored at the club’s Dec. 9 winter awards gala.

This is the second consecutive year that the Press Club has provided scholarships, a reflection of its strong membership growth and the generous support of this year’s gala sponsors.

“Any working journalist knows that it’s not easy to get your start in the Bay Area, where the cost of housing alone is a tremendous barrier to pursuing a career in the news business,” said Press Club Treasurer Dustin Gardiner. “This scholarship program is our effort to help a few promising young journalists make that leap, so they can do important work in this ever-so-expensive region.”

Rawls, a graduate student at UC Berkeley: “I’m extremely grateful to the San Francisco Press club for this generous scholarship. As an aspiring multimedia journalist, the award will expand my access to equipment and technology as I continue in my career.”

Grant, a graduate student at UC Berkeley: “I truly appreciate the opportunity from the SF Press Club to be named an Emerging Journalist. This scholarship will help tremendously with buying some camera equipment and travel expenses as I work on my photo thesis this year.”

Media sponsors for the event include KQED, The San Francisco Examiner, The New York Times, The San Francisco Business Times, and The San Francisco Chronicle. Businesses have thrown their support too, including Alembic, Bospar, Uber, Google, HRC Fertility, J. Lohr Wines, PG&E, and MSR Communications.
