Happy fall everyone. This is the latest edition of Scoop, your monthly roundup of media news and shifts across Northern California brought to you by the San Francisco Press Club. A bunch of things have happened since we last chatted, but before we get started, a reminder that the deadline to enter into the Press Club awards, Oct. 20, is fast approaching.
Also, to fully share in the love and accolades of your peers, mark Dec. 9 on your calendars for the annual Awards Gala. The event, which honors excellence in journalism and media in the Greater Bay Area, will be held in the beautiful Julia Morgan Ballroom, 465 California St. in San Francisco. Details on how to get your tickets will be available on our website in just a bit, so stay tuned! And of course, if you have tips on news items, send them our way at scoop@sfpressclub.org.
Media News
- KPIX / KION deepen ties following layoffs
CBS Bay Area (KPIX) has extended its news and weather footprint, partnering with KION to deliver reporting across Monterey, Santa Cruz, Salinas, and Carmel. The move comes amid a decision by the owners of KION to lay off more than a dozen workers, many of whom said they were taken by surprise. (The Guardian) - Historic press closure in Del Norte County
After 146 years of publishing, the Del Norte Triplicate shuttered, highlighting news deserts creeping into the northernmost parts of the state. The closure leaves no press in the county capable of publishing legal notices — a gap that may force public agencies toward centralized or digital-only communication. (SFGATE) - KRCB / NorCal Public Media open house
Northern California Public Media is hosting an open house on Oct. 26 at its new studios in Rohnert Park. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Sonoma County city. (NorCal Public Media) - KOIT, KBLX, KMVQ (99.7 NOW), and KUFX (98.5 KFOX) get new owners
In other radio news, Connoisseur Media announced plans to acquire a quartet of radio stations from Bonneville International Corporation. The move, which must be approved by the FCC, would increase Connoisseur’s holdings to 220 markets in 48 markets – including KEZR and KBAY in San Jose, and KUIC and KKIQ in the East Bay. (SF Chronicle) - Belva Davis remembered as a trailblazer in Bay Area journalism
Belva Davis, the first Black woman to anchor a television newscast on the West Coast, died Sept. 24 at age 92. Over a five-decade career at KPIX, KRON, and KQED, she covered defining California moments — from the Moscone-Milk assassinations to the rise of the Black Panthers — while mentoring generations of journalists. Her calm authority and unflinching curiosity reshaped local broadcast news and opened doors for countless others. (SF Chronicle) - Reggie Aqui signs off after a decade at ABC7
Longtime ABC7 Mornings anchor Reggie Aqui surprised viewers Tuesday by announcing his departure from KGO after 10 years on air. “This is both my ten-year work anniversary and my last day here at ABC7 News,” he said in an emotional on-air farewell, with co-host Amanda del Castillo visibly moved to tears. In a follow-up post on Instagram, Aqui wrote, “Not sure what’s next. Other than a much-deserved nap. What a ride that was.” (Instagram)
