Google adds historic newspaper archives

Google announced Tuesday (Sept. 5) that it has added a new feature to its search engine — the ability to search through more than 200 years of historical newspaper archives. The new feature can be found at http://news.google.com/archivesearch/. Mountain View-based Google provides more information about the new service at http://news.google.com/archivesearch/about.html. Eric Auchard of Reuters’ San Francisco bureau wrote a story about the archive service, noting how it will help readers obtain an historical context for today’s news. The PPC reported April 4 that the 130-year history of the Hearst-owned San Francisco Examiner have been donated to the University of California, Berkeley’s Bancroft Library. The library intends to scan the back issues of the Examiner and make them available via the Internet.
