SF Bay Guardian suit headed for trial

A suit by Bruce Brugmann’s (pictured) SF Bay Guardian against the chain that owns the rival SF Weekly appears to be headed for trial in the first three months of 2007, the Guardian reports. Brugmann claims the owner of the SF Weekly and East Bay Express, the 17-paper chain now known as Village Voice Media, has been selling ads below the cost of producing them in an effort to put his paper out of business. The Guardian claims that an attorney for Village Voice Media, Garret G. Rasmussen, acknowledged in off-the-record remarks heard in open court that some SF Weekly and East Bay Express ads were priced below cost, but that his client had other legal defenses it will use.
