Former Merc publisher quits Philly paper

Joe Natoli, publisher of the Mercury News from 2001 to 2004, has resigned as publisher of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News to become the chief financial officer of the University of Miami. Natoli is the latest publisher of a former Knight Ridder newspaper to resign as new owners take over the chain’s newspapers. In the past month, publishers have been replaced at KR papers in Akron, Ohio, and Boise, Idaho. In a letter to his staff, Natoli said he will be working for university president Donna Shalala, a former Clinton cabinet member.
