Minutes of Peninsula Press Club Board of Directors annual meeting Sept. 3, 2002, at the San Mateo County Times.
In attendance were: John Kane, Darryl Compton, Jack Russell, Michelle Carter, Ed Remitz, Dave Price, John Horgan and Aimee Lewis. The meeting was called to order at 11:05 a.m. Jon Mays arrived late at 11:25 a.m.
The minutes of the Aug. 6, 2002 meeting, with one change regarding a proposed slate of 2002-03 club officers, were approved 7-0.
The treasurer’s report was presented by Michelle Carter. It indicated an operating balance of $19,976.27 and a scholarship fund balance of $8,017.62. The treasurer’s report was approved 7-0.
A 2002-03 slate of club officers included: John Kane, president; Jack Russell, vice president; John Horgan, secretary; Michelle Carter, treasurer; and Aimee Lewis, Jon Mays, Dave Price, Ed Remitz and Bill Workman, board members. Club members have received their ballots by mail. Results will be tabulated at the next meeting.
Dave Price gave an update on the club’s Internet Web site. All systems appear to be go in this regard. It was noted that the club picnic is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 14 at Twin Pines Park in Belmont. It was agreed that John Horgan would contact officials of the San Francisco Press Club about a possible link with that group.
It was determined to change the time of the club’s monthly meeting to 10 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the San Mateo County Times. The board took no action regarding a San Francisco Chronicle decision to terminate a column written by Stephanie Salter.
It was noted that the next gathering of the Bench, Bar, Media Committee will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at Harry’s Hofbrau in Redwood City. The club’s annual Christmas party will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at Le Pot au Feu in Menlo Park (location has since been changed). Ed Remitz said the California Newspaper Publishers Association will sponsor a workshop for high school journalism teachers at Chabot College in Hayward in October.
Darryl Compton said he will need an increase in his stipend to produce the club’s annual journalism contest. That will be considered at a future meeting. Board members concluded the meeting by judging a final best-in-show entry provided by the San Diego Press Club.
The meeting was adjourned at 12:08 p.m. The next meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Oct. 1 at the San Mateo County Times.
