👋🏼 Welcome to the Bay Area Journalism Directory (& Graveyard). This is a Work In Progress, a collaboration between SPJ NorCal, SF Press Club, the Bay Area Independent Media Coalition, and Community News Lab.

🚀 This is meant to be a comprehensive, up-to-date list of professional and student newsrooms in the Greater Bay Area, which different audiences can use for various purposes.

Below is the current status of the project.

GeneralCollect feedback on the structure of the directory In ProgressWe are particularly interested in how we can adjust the directory to better display "where are we now and where do we want to be.” We have not seen examples of other regions whose directories address this.
GeneralImprove design/ interface of the directoryIn ProgressNotion databases work well but they’re not perfect, and we are interested in partnering with a designer to improve the UI and customize the look and feel for us.
Filling it inFill in the directoryIn ProgressJulia and Laura have seeded the database, with a particular focus on San Francisco county. We’ll need support from our partners to help fill in professional and student newsrooms across all the Greater Bay Area counties.

👀 The “Bay Area Outlets” table is what you see below. It is sorted by county. From top to bottom: San Francisco, Alameda County, San Mateo County, Contra Costa County, Santa Clara County, and more.

➡️ To the right of “Bay Area outlets,” you can click on other tables: Student outlets, Neighborhood papers, Community/ Ethnic media, and State/ National presence (for publications that have a presence in the Bay Area). We also have a view for “Inactive/ At risk” outlets, followed by the Bay Area Local News Graveyard.

💕 About: This directory was designed in 2025 by Julia Gitis and Dr. Laura Moorehead, supporting the work of SPJ NorCal’s education committee and the Bay Area Independent Media Coalition. Julia Gitis started working on this in 2024 when she was on the board of the San Francisco Press Club, with fellow board members Dan Rosenheim and Juan Gonzales. Thank you to many journalists and journalism advocates in the Bay Area who sent us spreadsheets and PDF files that we used for this directory, and everyone who helps us maintain it.
