In the February sweeps, KPIX CBS5 is claiming a first-place victory among the four stations airing news at 11 p.m. though KTVU Channel 2 continues to top all of the news stations in the market with its 10 p.m. news. CBS5 says in a news release that it’s Monday-Friday rating at 11 p.m. was 4.4 compared to 3.7 for KGO ABC7, 3.0 for KNTV NBC11 and 1.4 for KRON4. However, KTVU got a 5.6 rating for its “10’O Clock News,”
Chron columnist Leah Garchik reports that fellow Chron columnist Phil Matier (pictured) “joins the stampede from KRON. His move to CBS5-TV becomes official today, and his first on-air appearance there will be Tuesday.” Last month, 17-year KRON anchor Tom Sinkovitz quit the station. He hasn’t said where he is going, but rumor has it that he too is headed to CBS5.
Dave McElhatton and Hank Plante KPIX CBS 5 has uploaded some of its historic news clips to its website (where it says “top stories” toggle down to “Classic KPIX), including a riveting 39-minute tape of its coverage immediately after the 1989 earthquake, anchored by an unflappable Dave McElhatton who rolls through aftershocks at the news desk. McElhatton is pictured here getting a first-hand report from Hank Plante, who tells him that he saw “people shouting ‘This is the big one.’” Wayne
