John Farley leaves NBC 11 after 13 years

John Farley, NBC Bay Area’s chief meteorologist, announced to viewers last night that he was leaving the station. He did not say where he was going or why he was leaving. His announcement surprised viewers, many of whom left comments on the NBC Bay Area Web site. Farley joined KNTV in March 1996 as the morning meteorologist and moved to evenings in September 1998. NBC11 switches to HD, modifies branding

With the Olympics just a few weeks away, KNTV Channel 11 has begun producing its local news in HD and has changed its on-air brand from “NBC11” to “NBC Bay Area,” dropping any reference to a channel number. Former news director Terry McElhatton dies

Former long-time KNTV news director Terry McElhatton died over the weekend from a massive heart attack at age 52, according to KNTV and his current employer, Valley Christian Schools. McElhatton, the son of former KPIX anchorman Dave McElhatton, was driving home with his son Chris after spending the day windsurfing when he collapsed. Former KNTV anchor loses race bias case

The Chronicle says that a state appeals court has rejected a discrimination suit filed by a white anchor at KNTV, Brad Hicks, who was replaced by an African American. The court agreed with management who said they were concerned about Hicks’ on-the-air style, not his race. Hicks was one of several anchors whose contracts were not renewed in 2003 after NBC brought in new management. He said in his suit that he was more qualified than his successor and that

Channel 11 hires Tom Sinkovitz

NBC11 announced today it has hired former KRON anchor Tom Sinkovitz as a reporter and fill-in anchor. He will start Wednesday night covering the Republican debate in Los Angeles and the Democratic debate on Thursday, TV critic Susan Young notes on her blog. Giants jump from Channel 2 to NBC11

After 50 years on Channel 2, the Giants are moving their local broadcast games to NBC11. The Giants broadcast team — Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow — will stay with the team as they move from KTVU Oakland to KNTV San Jose. Terms of the three-year deal weren’t disclosed. New leader for KNTV NBC 11

NBC Universal is moving KNTV NBC11 president and general manager Linda Sullivan to the same post at KNBC-TV Los Angeles. Replacing Sullivan at KNTV is Rich Cerussi, who was executive vp of the NBC station group’s national sales organization. Prior to that, Cerussi KNTV’s vp and station manager who was instrumental in moving KNTV from the Salinas-Monterey-San Jose market to San Francisco. The station became an NBC affiliate in January 2002 and was purchased four months later by NBC Universal.

Aguirre to start at NBC 11 next month

It didn’t take long for Jessica Aguirre to land a new job after management at KGO ABC 7 told her they would not be renewing her contract. Next month she starts at KNTV NBC 11, co-anchoring the 5 p.m. news. She’s no longer on the air at Channel 7 and her bio has been removed from the talent page on the station’s Web site. Ch. 2 tops in late news, Ch. 5 first at 11

In the February sweeps, KPIX CBS5 is claiming a first-place victory among the four stations airing news at 11 p.m. though KTVU Channel 2 continues to top all of the news stations in the market with its 10 p.m. news. CBS5 says in a news release that it’s Monday-Friday rating at 11 p.m. was 4.4 compared to 3.7 for KGO ABC7, 3.0 for KNTV NBC11 and 1.4 for KRON4. Better pictures expected from new chopper

KNTV NBC11 has purchased a new helicopter with four cameras that should provide more stable and close-up pictures than previously possible.
