Food inspection reports harder to find

San Mateo County Times columnist John Horgan, who regularly reports when restaurants and food stores are shut down by health inspectors, says the county government has halted its weekly online reports about food purveyors. The San Mateo County Health Department’s website says will no longer issue those announcements. Instead the reports are now buried on the county’s website. Here’s how you can find them (thanks John for figuring this out!): Go to: www.co.sanmateo.ca.us. On the right side, click “departments” In

Ex-editor John Bowman rips MediaNews

San Jose State professor John McManus has posted an interview with former San Mateo County Times executive editor John Bowman (pictured), who quit two weeks ago over budget cuts that have reduced local news coverage by that MediaNews paper. “They’re way past the point of diminishing returns, of penny-wise and pound-foolish,” Bowman says of MediaNews, the chain headed by Dean Singleton. Points Bowman makes include: • In 2004, the Times had four editors and 12 full-time reporters. Now it has

Correction about John Bowman’s resignation

An item we posted yesterday implied John Bowman resigned as executive editor of the San Mateo County Times because of cuts the paper’s owner, MediaNews, made at the San Jose Mercury News. While Bowman was present at the meeting where the Merc cuts were discussed, he said he resigned because of deep cuts MediaNews made at the San Mateo County Times. (Yesterday’s item has been corrected.) “Staffing is dangerously thin,” Bowman said today. An overworked staff is making “the kind

The Merc plans this summer to eliminate 60 more newsroom positions — 24 percent of its 250-person news staff, according to SJSU journalism professor John McManus. The news comes two weeks after the Chronicle said it intended to cut 25 percent of its newsroom. It will be the second round of layoffs at the Merc since Dean Singleton (pictured here in a newsroom meeting in April 2006) took control of the San Jose daily 10 months ago. After the first
